An awesome short story you should check out :D

So we read this short story in my English class one year and I fell in love with it. It's awesome and I wanted to share it with you guys. So I have a link placed below. Enjoy!

4. I wasn't a big fan of Maureen Johnson's book 13 Little Blue Envelopes, but after your high praise of  The Name of the Star I must read it!

Hahaha, yeah I know that was lame, but hey at least I can still joke around! I think it's one of the saddest things when people have been so jaded by life that they can barely smile anymore...
Of course this being a post by K it's going to be all over the place as usual. So enjoy the long, random but entertaining (hopefully) ride :)
So first off I would just like to complain for a second because I'm very annoyed!!! My knee has been feeling really strange for a few weeks so far so I've been trying to stay off of it but it hasn't really helped (All The Way Up- Emily Osment, don't judge me! lol). So I'm just going to go back to my usual work out routine since putting it on pause hasn't helped :p
Guess what I just realized today. I've always known this I guess, but never really acknowledged it until today. When the book has a girl for the main character, I hate it when she's a "damsel in distress." Nothing annoys me more than a girl who can't take care of herself. Now don't get me wrong, I don't mean that she has to always deal with things on her own and never let anyone help her. That's not what I'm saying at all. (Pretending- Glee version). What I mean is I hate it when the girl always counts on a guy to rescue her because then she never learns to rescue herself. It's kinda like the song Cinderella by the Cheetah Girls (yeah, I know throwback moment haha). "I don't wanna be like Cinderella, Sitting in a dark, cold, dusty cellar, Waiting for somebody to come and set me free, I don't wanna be like someone waiting, For a handsome prince to come and save me, I'd rather rescue myself." Does that make sense at all? I like a strong independent female lead, but I just don't believe that independent means that she has to do everything on her own. How about I give you an example of what I mean (of a female character I don't like): Isabella Swan (you should have seen that coming). She completely changes her life for a guy and basically set herself up for disaster when he left to "protect" her. I hate that. I can understand if you truly love a guy and he actually is the guy you want to marry. Yes, he's supposed to protect you and you're supposed to be able to depend on him, but you also need to know how to depend on yourself. (Far Away- Nickelback). I'm not sure if I got my point across, but if I didn't oh well. I'm moving on with this post.
My reasoning for posting so soon anyway is because I was reading M's latest post and I saw that she got book #15 for her list (congratulations by the way). That just made me realize that I have yet to set up my own list of 55 books *insert my "I'm so appalled" face here* haha. Anywho so that's what I will be doing with my lovely night while I try not to die of heat stroke. I just wanted to inform all of our lovely readers that I will begin my own list since M and I have different books on ours (despite the many things we have in common). (Not Afraid- Eminem).
Okay, so I love summer as much as the next student, but I'm not a summer chick. Yeah, there are days where I love to feel the warmth the sun radiates. It's relaxing and feels amazing, but this whole two months of upper 90s and lower 100 degrees of weather is NOT my cup of hot coco (I don't like tea... Mercy-Duffy). I'm a perfect weather gal. Of course mother nature does not always give us perfect weather despite my pleas. So I always tend to enjoy the cold more. I love the cold because that means I can drink hot coco and bundle under covers while watching a good movie. Plus, my body is naturally cold (you won't believe how many times I've had friends tell me how cold my hands are) and I like it that way. I don't like sweating and I don't like all the exposed skin girls show in the summer (yes, I would say I'm rather conservative in the way I dress, but I'm not a nun or anything -.-). I'm just not a summer weather girl so this weather is kicking my butt (Fade to Black- Apocalyptica). However, I'm enjoying summer and I hope you are too :)
Oh one quick thing before I go. I won't be doing star ratings anymore. Purely because I'm forgetful and often too lazy to do so. I'm sorry if you're disappointed, but I think I do a pretty decent job of making my opinion known of a book in my posts. Yups, that's all. Good bye for now!!!

15) The Name of the Star

ok guys i know i just posted a couple days ago, but since then i have finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (which made me feel like my life's purpose was gone because i've spent so much of my time with Harry, Ron, and Hermoine o' course :P ). the re-reading of the entire series was very satisfying and i picked up on some stuff that i hadn't noticed the first time around. i wholly (sp?) encourage K to get through the series because they're awesome. nuff said. (song: Come As You Are (live)--Nirvana)
i went to our public library today for my volunteer shift (this happens every thursday during the summer) and checked out a book despite the fact that i told myself i would walk out of there empty-handed. it's called Chopsticks by: Jessica Anthony and Rodrigo Corral. a couple months ago i had read a review on a book blog i read occassionally. it's a book that tells a story through pictures, letters, quotes, and other types of mixed media forms. i was intrigued and thus when i saw it on the New Book Shelf at the library i just HAD to pick it up. i'm very intrigued to start it and sorta flipped through it earlier. (song: Bullet with Butterfly Wings--Smashing Pumpkins) so that is now on my stack of books (it's pretty small though so i don't feel quite so bad about it).
after finishing the wonderful series of Ms. Rowling, i started The Name of the Star by: Maureen Johnson. this book has been in the back of my mind since whenever it came out. a friend of mine is a huge fan of Maureen Johnson, so she kept going on and on about it when we were in Barnes and Noble. i told myself that i would read it eventually, but hadn't seen it around the library much because it was always checked out when i was in there. so, when i went to the library (probably for another volunteer shift) a couple weeks ago and saw it was in, i was thrilled. (Ain't No Rest for the Wicked--Cage the Elephant) although the other books i checked out that day were due, i kept only this one because i had been waiting so long to read it. as it turns out, it's a great thing that i read this right after Harry Potter, because there were some noticeable similarities that made it easier to transition into real life again. for example: it takes place at an English boarding school where there are prefects and head boys and girls. i was so excited when i found that part out. now, i don't know if all English boarding schools are organized like this, but it came as a shock to me, the naive American. (The House of the Rising Sun--The Animals) oh and i should also point out that i'm very into books that take place in boarding schools, so if there are any suggestions out there, that would be great. anyway, a quick synopsis for y'all:
Aurora (Rory...like in Gilmore Girls :P ) is from New Orleans and moves to England her senior year of high school to go to boarding school at Wexford, a pretty prestigious school. (One Headlight--The Wallflowers) London is in a state of panic after a murder takes place in exactly the same fashion of the killings of Jack the Ripper in the 1800's. This copycat is scaring everyone because they know that the city isn't safe on certain days (the same days that the original Ripper victims were killed). Rory finds herself in the middle of all the conflict and has to juggle that, her new friends and roommates, homework, and adjusting to the culture of boarding school.
This book is great because it incorporates mystery, romance, chick lit (which is pretty much the same as the one before it), paranormal, and suspense. i haven't enjoyed a book this much in a long time. i was on the edge of my seat for the majority of the book and started it one day (read 30 pages) then finished it the next day and the book is 370 pages long. i was hooked from the start. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone. (My Hero--Foo Fighters *sidenote: i like the acoustic version better, but whatever*) i simply can't explain how great this book was and am thoroughly looking forward to the next books in the series when they come out. until then, i will continue enjoying reading Maureen Johnson's tweets, as they are always obscure yet awesome in a creepy way. anyway, for those reasons and many more, The Name of the Star deserves a spot on The List of 55. we're up to #15! woo hoo! yay us!
so, after reading such an awesome book, i sat down last night and had planned to start reading Obsessed by Ted Dekker, but was somehow drawn to a Sarah Dessen book because i was feeling very girly and needed some good chick lit. so, i grabbed my copy of Along For the Ride and read it until about 4am when i finally gave in and fell asleep (i stayed up to read it in homage to Eli and Auden's nighttime wanderings). i then finished it today and was very pleased. (Brain Stew--Green Day) however, i've said it before and i'll say it again: the ending isn't quite satisfying. as K said in her last post: it's like The Vow's ending. we're girls. we need closure and a good, satisfying, if not stereotypical and cheesy ending to keep us happy. (Self Esteem--The Offspring)
on a completely unrelated note, i'm really enjoying my Nirvana Pandora station right now, as you might've noticed from my song choices. i've been listening to it for the past few days and i feel like Owen would be so proud of how much i've branched out. i never would've thought that i would be the type of person to listen to Nirvana, but here i am. so i guess you never know until you try. also, stereotyping people is bad. in general. i'm just pointing this out because people are often more than they appear to be. oh and i was very happy when i saw that Serena Williams won her match at Wimbledon this morning. i will definitely be rooting for her Saturday morning in the finals if i'm up. this ties back to the whole England obsession that i harbor, as does K. we have problems and we know it. (In One Ear--Cage the Elephant) ok enough rambling from me. good bye, auvoir, adios. Long time, no blog

I've been listening to music constantly all day. I love music with every fiber of my being. I honestly don't know what I'd do without music. Actually I do, I'd go insane. If I don't have my headphones in then most likely I'm singing a song (aloud or in my head, depends who I'm with haha). I could go on forever talking about music, but I'll just say what I was originally going to. Currently listening to: Dance Again by Jennifer Lopez ft. Pitbull (we dance to this in zumba and I've been mildly obsessed with it *insert my sheepish grin here*
Oh and I would also like to give my deepest and most sincerest apologizes for not blogging often even though it's summer. I wish I had an excuse for my absence, but in all honesty I've just been extremely lazy and too caught up in reading fanfiction (my friend got me hooked on this website :p haha, but it's all good. I still love her anyways).
So, in case you haven't already noticed this is going to be a really random post purely because I don't feel like organizing my thoughts. Welcome to the inside of my brain *insert my evil grin and laughter here* Just kidding!!! Sorta, my mind isn't that bad...it's just a little all over the place (not sure if you already figured that out from previous posting...oh no my crazy is already showing via blog D:  hahaha, oh goodness. One of my best friends gets home from Colombia on Friday night!!! I'm super excited. I haven't seen her in a little over a month and have missed her greatly. I'm used to seeing her everyday since we live in the same apartment building. Since the day we met we've been practically inseparable. (song: Irene by tobyMac). So as soon as she gets home she's going to come visit me to say hi :) We have summer bucket list that we're going to quickly put into action when she gets back since she's moving to a different state at the beginning of August. I was heart broken when I found out she was moving, but I know she'll quickly make friends at her new school :)
Okaie doks now on to the book chatter!!! Hahaha, that reminded me of this talk show host Alan Carr: Chatty Man (he's hilarious and British). I shall be discussing several books with you all (if there's anyone even reading this post or managed to sit through my rambling-again sorry). So sit tight and enjoy my opinion on stuffs (song: A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes by the Disney Channel Co-stars. Don't judge me!)

Leap Day by Wendy Mass- This is the book M gave me on our last book swap. I finished it a month or soago and forgot to blog about it (it was my stress reliever book from studying for finals :p). I loved and disliked this book at the same time. If you liked this book don't get your undies in a twist. I'll explain what I didn't like about the book in a moment. I would like to say what I enjoyed about the book first if you don't mind (haha you don't really have a say since you're not here while I type this *smug smile* song: Breathe by Taylor Swift).
Pros of Leap Day:
1. I liked the "main" character
2. I enjoyed the twins. I don't really know why, but I pictured them to be adorable with a little child like innocence.
3. The family relationship was awesome because it was believable and could actually depict how an actual family would act around each other. I wasn't a huge fan of the mom though. I mean she was okay, but she irked me a little. Whoops sorry I'm supposed to be talking about good things. Lo siento (song: When You Look Me in the Eyes by the Jonas Brothers).
4. I thought the friendships between the friends was very sincere and true to real life.
5. You got to see into the minds of other characters and I'm a big fan of different point of views :)
Random note: you wouldn't know, but I just spent several minutes laughing at my older brother (who is almost 20 may I add) who was in bathroom squealing because there was a spider in there and he had a bit of trouble killing it. It was hilarious. song: Won't Give Up by Jason Mraz (if you haven't heard of it then stop reading right now and go youtube it. It's beautiful and I love it so much). Back to my review of Leap Day.
Cons:
1. I feel like Mass was a little to flippy floppy in the POV and I felt a couple of the POV were unnecessary.
2. The guy the main character, Josie, was a jerk. That's not a reason why I didn't like the book (most guys us girls like end up to be jerks so whatever), I just wanted to point out that fact.  (song: Heaven by O.A.R)
3. There wasn't a third reason, but I had already typed the three so yeah...


Oh. My. Gods by Tera Lynn Childs- I must confess that I read the second book first, but it was completely by accident!!! I felt really bad about reading them out of order, but I didn't know and I did end up reading the first book!!! So it's all good. Forgive me? (song: Boomin' by tobyMac). Anywho, I enjoyed this book a lot. I'm not sure what it is, but I've always been fascinated by Greek mythology. I don't believe in it, but I think it's really cool and interesting. If you're into Greek mythology books then you should like this book. Especially if you enjoy some good romances and a few chick "fights" (nothing to major, I mean I enjoyed it *shrugs*). Oh M I think you should definitely read this book because the main character, Phoebe happens to be a cross country runner ;) (song: Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen). Sorry, but that's all I'll give you. If you haven't figured out yet I try not to give to many details because I'm afraid I'll give something away. Yeah, I'm paranoid like that. Just read the book so you can form your own opinion :)


I got the book Getting Over Garrett Delaney by Abby McDonald. It was part of my very belated birthday gift from my brother. Just so you know I'm about to go on a rant, but I'll let you know ahead time that my opinion of this book was pretty much the same as M's. In case you missed her description of it here ya go. M's thoughts on the book (it's number eight down if you want to read it right away).
(song: Black or White by Micheal Jackson). Okay now here's my rant:
I don't understand!!! There's two things I don't understand to be specific:
1. How can you wrap your life around someone, let alone a guy!??!
2. How can one guy be so flipping condescending, judgmental and a pompous jerk!!!???
3. How could Sadie not see what a butt face Garrett is??? -I know I said there was only two things, but I thought of this and yeah...
I'm sorry if you feel this gave away the book, but I don't think so and I think you need to read the book to see what I'm talking about. Plus, I kinda just loved the 'girl power' in this book for lack of better words. I'm not quite sure how to describe it, but it reminded me a bit of Sarah Dessen's book Keeping the Moon (I think M will know what I mean when I say this). Oh, but I disliked the ending. I mean it was decent, but I didn't think it was a substantial ending for the same reason I felt the movie "The Vow" didn't have a substantial ending.

That's all the book reviews I have for you, but here's a list of what I now must do (reading wise):
1. Finish the Harry Potter series *insert my "I'm ashamed of myself" face here* I enjoy the series (well I'm kinda in love with them, but not the point) I just haven't had time and I also want to watch the movies while I read them so I can do comparisons. I'm sad to admit that I've seen all the books (and I watched them before I read the books. If you shun me I understand- song: Come Clean by Hilary Duff). Oh, but I had a very heated discussion/debate with my brother and mom about Twilight vs. Harry Potter. They were just trying to get me to see "logically" from a Twilight fans point of view. However, they just shut up when they realized I wasn't going to let up. I will take anyone head on in a debate on that matter. Don't EVER say that Twilight is just as good as the Harry Potter series (or better). I have read all four books in the Twilight series and it was pure torture seeing as I wanted to just kill the main character. Honestly through out the whole time I thought Stephanie Meyers was going to kill her off, that was my motivation to keep reading the books. (song: Who Says by Selena Gomez). I've never hated a main character as much as I hated Bella. The only thing I can praise Meyers for is her descriptive fight scenes (even though she didn't have the balls to kill off anyone important- sorry for the language, but it's true), her other characters in the story (I actually liked majority of the other characters in the story). However, I think the moral of the story was basically "If your boyfriend- who has to resist from killing you every second may I add- leaves you then your life no longer holds any meaning and you should worry everyone who cares about you by doing careless, stupid, dangerous things because the 'rush' reminds you of him" and just the whole plot of the books was completely idiotic. No. The Twilight series will can't even compare to the Harry Potter series. No, just flipping no. End of discussion.

2. Read Little Women by Louisa May Alcott so I can discuss it with my grandma
3. Re-read Saving Sailor by Renee Riva simply because it used to be one of my favorite books
4. Re-read the first two books in the Wings series by Aprilynne Pike (as a refresher) so I can read the last two books
5. Get the fourth book in the Mortal Instruments series (M I still would like for you to at least give the first book a shot, but I understand your hesitation and I won't push since I'm already making you listen to country music ;]).
6. Read and annotate The Golden Fleece and the heroes who lived before Achilles (I told you I'm into Greek mythology...I wasn't kidding). ---Song: Superman by Taylor Swift
7. Read Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen for the millionth time then watch all the different movie versions of the book, while saving the Keira (spell check???) Knightly version for last <3
8. Not book related but I'm going to spend a whole day eating junk while watching the whole sixth season of Gilmore Girls :)

Before I wrap up this post I have to mention this other blog on tumblr. I found it through Pintrest a few days ago and I really like it. It reminds me of the book Waiting for You by Susane Colasanti (picture of the cover at the right). Anywho, I think the guy is pretty cool, but I don't know who he is. That's the whole point. He gives advice to random people, but refuse to post a picture of himself (despite many girls asking him to). It's to prove his point that looks are not the most important thing in life and just because you don't need to know what he looks like for him to give you advice. That's one of the things I think is awesome about the guy. He also will answer questions about himself if asked. Anyway his blog is pretty cool. It's called theCRAZYtruth. Check it out if you get the chance.

random musings

You know that scene in A Cinderella Story where they show the entire neighborhood's grass to be dead and then zoom in on the one house that has green grass? maybe its just me. however, my point being that if Google maps or whatever they used to do the bird's eye view in the movie were to focus on my neighborhood, our house would be that green one. we are in the middle of a semi-drought and my dad is obsessive about watering his lawn. daily. i don't get it. conserve water.
I am currently re-reading all the Harry Potter books and am on the Deathly Hallows. as much as i love these books (and believe me, i do), i feel like i haven't got the chance to read anything else all summer. so, after i finish the series, my book priority list is as follows:

1. The Name of the Stars- Maureen Johnson
2. Obsessed- Ted Dekker
3. The Song of the Sparrow- ?? (i need to read this so that K and i can have another book swap)
4. 1984- George Orwell (not of MY choosing, but of the AP Lit teachers' choosing)

Summer is almost halfway over and i feel as if i've done absolutely nothing that i told myself i would do.  hmmm thats ridiculous. however, that's how my summers all end up. oh and i still haven't redecorated my room like i said i would this summer. yeah. i'm that lazy. also, i really would like to see K again somewhat soon. oh and on a related note, K and I have been spamming each other's FB pages with music. it's great. except for that awful country song she tried to get me to listen to....that was really bad. Owen (from Just Listen by Sarah Dessen) would be so proud of our Music Enlightenment. it's really too bad that he doesn't exist. also, i've been using my time this summer to immerse myself even deeper in different types of music.
I apologize now for the randomness and seemingly insignificant-ness of this post. I just thought that our devoted readers *insert sarcastic smile here* deserved a post since the last one was about a month ago.

Anything and Everything

Sarah Dessen:
-I found it funny how M re-read Keeping the Moon because I'm currently re-reading it. We're such hardcore fans haha :)
-I find it hard to believe that M re-read Dreamland though. Okay, not entirely (I mean seriously, it's a Dessen book). However, every time I think about the book it opens a new can of pure rage. I just hated how weak the main character was. Yes, I do realize that he was manipulating her to think that he was only hitting her because he loved her and blah blah. I just can't approve of a girl letting herself being a guy's personal punching bag. I mean it's one thing if you're too scared to do anything. I can understand that, but just letting him hit you repeatedly? No, not going to fly. Oh my goodness and if a guy hit one of my friends? He would go missing, just saying. Okay I'm going to end my rant here.

Tanner Patrick:
I am currently listening to his cover of Ours (original by Taylor Swift). Tanner has an amazing voice and does awesome covers of a lot of my favorite songs (that are known to most people). Oh and it doesn't hurt that he's extremely attractive (he has gorgeous eyes. Like seriously they're flipping beautiful). If you haven't heard any off his covers then let me help you with that: Tanner Patrick's cover of "Paradise"

SUMMER TIME!:
Like most people I'm super pumped that it's summer time. Yet, I can admit that in a few weeks I'll probably be bored out of my mind and wish I was in school just so I could have something to do. However, I do have more plans than usual for this summer. I'll just list them out for ya:
1. Summer bucket list with a group of friends
2. Movie nights/sleepovers
3. Reading :D
4. Running
5. THE ZOO (I know this may sound like I'm five, but whatever I don't care. I have this really strong urge to go to the zoo. I haven't been in forever and I really want to go...preferably on a day where its not so hot to point where you feel like you're going to pass out).
6. Water balloon/water gun fight
7. Flashlight tag
8. More running
9. Eating
10. Visiting University of Chicago
11. New York (possibly)
12. Other stuff I'm too lazy to list so I'm just going to stop here


Book Related STUFFS:

• I have a new book picked out for the next book swap with M (after she finishes the one from last time :) ). I think she'll like it for reasons that I will go into details for when it's time for the next book swap
• Much A Do About Nothing (by Shakespeare)- we were required to read it for English. I'm starting to realize that I only enjoy the comedy parts of Shakespeare's plays. Other than that, I hate them. I know he's one of the greatest writers and what not, but I just don't really care for his plays much. However, I do enjoy his poems. Especially the ones about the Dark Lady. Mainly because throughout the whole play he is giving her a backhanded compliment. It's quite hilarious. He's basically saying "You're ugly, you smell, there's nothing special about you, but HEY! I love you" Haha, I just think its funny.
• My brother is getting me like three or four books as a very belated birthday present and I'm extremely excited!!! :)
• Two Way Street (mentioned in M's last post)- I thought it was funny that M read it & enjoyed it because that was going to be one of the books I was going to give her for one of our book swaps! At least I know she would have liked it.
• Leap Day by Wendy Mass- This is the book I received from M during our last swap. I think it was a pretty cool book. It's about this girl, Josie, and her birthday is on leap day (which the book took place on). However, what's different about this book is that every other chapter is told from everyone else's perspective. You get to see into the mind of all these different characters which put a cool twist on everything. While I enjoyed the book I give it a 3/5. I shall list my reasoning below

1. Josie has a crush on a butthead
2. I never really connected with Josie throughout the whole book
3. I liked how I got to see into the mind of other characters, but Mass didn't do a good job of elaborating. She left out stuff about the character that would be interesting to know. Go big or go home *shrugs*
4. I wasn't satisfied with the ending of the book. It just sort of ended. I mean there was a bit of closure, but nothing that just blows you away.
So that is why it only received three stars from me.

• Out of Sight, Out of Time by Ally Carter- I finally got around to reading this book last week (I got it over spring break...sad I know) and I still haven't decided how I feel about it. While it was pretty good, it was definitely not the best out of the Gallagher Girl series. I'll just let you guys read it and come to your on conclusion on the book.

MUSIC:
I love music. I mean more than the average. I wouldn't say I'm quite on Owen's level (M you better get that or I may have to disown you), but I think I'm getting there. Music is just such a beautiful thing. Right now my iTunes is on shuffle and Fifteen by Taylor Swift is playing...not exactly what I'm in the mood to hear, but I'll go with it.

Be Back In a Jiffy

Ello loves! So I just got done reading M's latest post and it reminded me that I really need to get caught up also. However, I cannot do that at this moment because I just came back in from a run (it was so flipping hot outside...I know what was I expecting from summer) and am in desperate need for a shower then food. I promise I shall get on later to get you lovely folks up to speed.
